What is Wi-Fi Calling? Who needs it? How much does it cost?
Wi-Fi Calling is a cool technology that allows us to use Wi-Fi networks instead of traditional mobile coverage for sending SMS or MMS and making calls. 📡 On one hand, it’s a convenient option to use domestically, where traditional coverage sometimes fails. But most importantly, it’s an ideal solution when you’re abroad – because you’ll pay for all calls made and messages sent to Poland as if you were making them from within our country. That is:
- → If you are abroad and call/send a message to Poland… 🌎➡️🇵🇱
- → If you are in Poland and call/send a message to Poland… 🇵🇱➡️ 🇵🇱
- …then you pay the domestic rate. In practice, this means – for Vikings using plans with unlimited domestic services (No Limit, Chill On, and of course Match) – that you can do it for free.
- → If you are in the Eurozone and call/send a message to another country within the Eurozone… 🇪🇺➡️🇪🇺
- …you pay the standard roaming rate.
- However, you will pay for international voice calls/SMS/MMS in the following cases:
- → If you are in Poland and call/send a message abroad, 🇵🇱➡️🌎
- → If you are in the Eurozone and call/send a message to a country outside the Eurozone, 🇪🇺➡️🌎
- → If you are outside the Eurozone and call/send a message to a country within the Eurozone or outside the Eurozone. 🌎➡️🌎
If you want to recall our actual roaming rates, check here. And enabling Wi-Fi Calling itself, of course, costs nothing!

How to enable Wi-Fi Calling? Is it safe?
To use the service, you first need a phone that supports Wi-Fi Calling technology in a way adapted to the requirements of our infrastructure partner, Play. You can find the list of currently available devices here. It will be updated. Is your smartphone on this list? 🍾 All that’s left is to enable the service.
- 🍏 For iOS devices (version 10.3 or newer) 🍏
- → Go to device settings
- → Click Phone
- → Enable Wi-Fi Calling
- 🤖 And if you use Android (version 5.0 or newer) 🤖
- → Open phone settings
- → Select "Mobile Network"
- → Then "Mobile Data"
- → Enable Wi-Fi Calling
And you’re done! Unless not 😱 If you’re sure you have a compatible device, you’ve followed the instructions precisely, and something’s not right – try the universal troubleshooting method for all devices – turn your phone off and on, or remove and reinsert the SIM card.
Alright, but is it safe at all? Like wading in a kiddie pool – absolutely. Calls are double-encrypted (non 3GPP access standard), so you don't have to worry, even if you're using public hotspots. Afraid that while using Wi-Fi Calling abroad, your phone might stealthily decide to abandon the Wi-Fi network for traditional mobile coverage, draining your wallet dry? 😱 There’s a simple trick for that – set your phone to airplane mode and then connect to Wi-Fi.
Now it’s time for the second star of the show (or the coffin of our competition, hehe).
What is VoLTE? What are its benefits?
Who doesn’t get happy when three letters appear on their phone’s signal indicator: LTE? You immediately know the internet will be blazing fast. VoLTE is nothing more than technology that enables voice calls to be made using the LTE standard. That means faster and in better quality! 👄 It doesn’t mean you’ll be spitting words like Eminem while hitting all the octaves of Edyta Górniak, but you’ll still feel the difference.
There’s also a second, perhaps even more important, matter – until now, as some may have noticed, when talking on the phone, the device would automatically drop to the 2G or 3G standard. This means that as long as the call lasted, you couldn’t use the internet! 😭 Need to quickly check something on Google so you don't look foolish during the conversation? Find the bus schedule for grandma who lost her glasses but needs to get to the market? None of that. But that’s now the past. Thanks to VoLTE (but also thanks to Wi-Fi Calling, of course), you’ll have internet with you, even during phone calls. Hooray for technology!
How to enable this whole VoLTE thing and how much does it cost?
To use VoLTE, you just need to be within Play’s LTE coverage (but this option doesn’t work within national and international roaming). Just like with Wi-Fi Calling, you also need a phone that supports this functionality through Play. You can find the list of models here (plot twist – it’s the same list as for Wi-Fi Calling). Some smartphones will have this service activated automatically, but just in case, here are the paths to enable VoLTE manually.
- 🤖 On Android 🤖
- → Go to Settings
- → Then to Mobile Network
- → There, to Mobile Data
- → Enable VoLTE Calls.
- 🍏 On iOS, it’s very similar 🍏
- → Go to Settings
- → Then to Cellular
- → Then to Cellular Data Options
- → There, select Voice & Data
- → Choose LTE, VoLTE On.
Using VoLTE technology does not incur any additional costs. You pay for each call as you did before – which means it’s quite possible you pay nothing if you have an unlimited plan. 🆓 What’s more, you don’t even need to have data transfer enabled to use LTE voice calls. The icon won’t appear next to the signal indicator, but VoLTE will work. That’s magic :)
