I've written here before that smartphones that fold into a powder compact are fashionable because they're fashionable and foldable – or something along those lines. In terms of practicality, it's hard to consider them any better than traditional phones, meaning those that, after folding in half, are only fit for the bin. However, they look very stylish, and their shape is still associated with two huge advantages. Firstly, unlike oversized flagships, "foldables" don't attract all the attention of passers-by when you carry them in your trouser pocket. Secondly, once you take such a foldable out of your pocket, it will attract all the attention of passers-by. Especially if it's a Motorola Razr 40 Ultra.
I fell in love with the RAZR 40 Ultra...
By Odin, this beauty looks amazing! Slim from the side even when folded, the bottom half is pleasantly matte, and the top... the top is almost 100% an external screen that even surrounds the cameras! It's truly impressive.
Besides, it's also practical! On the smaller, square screen of the Motka, you can do practically everything you can on the main one – reply to messages, switch songs on Spotify, watch videos on YouTube, mindlessly scroll through your Facebook feed, close an app and then open it again a second later and do the same unconsciously… oh, thank goodness I've unlearned that!
A convenient solution with two screens
In any case, the Razr 40 Ultra could get by with just this one, small screen, and it would still be a fully functional smartphone. Of course, the internal display remains the more convenient one, but the awareness that you don't have to open the phone every time you just want to check something trivial is very pleasant. Especially since I know that after unfolding the smartphone, that *“check one trivial thing”* usually doesn't end there for me, and I use the external panel for its intended purpose – I do what I have to do on it, and the phone immediately goes back into my pocket.
Okay, we already know that thanks to the amazing, modern screen on the casing, Motorola is ALMOST as functional as ordinary, cheaper, and more durable phones. But does the display offer anything else? Yes! I love taking selfies with the main cameras because they always provide better quality, and here I have an instant preview. Even more, I love taking pictures of my friends. They also see on the screen immediately how they look, so later they can only complain to themselves. Better safe than sorry!
Is it worth buying the Motorola RAZR 40 Ultra?
The styling of the Razr 40 Ultra steals the show, but it's not the only advantage of this model. For example, Motorola is the most powerful "foldable" on the market – thanks to last year's flagship Snapdragon on board, it has no problems even with demanding games. And since it unfortunately gets a bit warm during longer gaming sessions, it will also be a perfect replacement for gloves and a companion for chilly Nordic evenings…
Especially since, thanks to stereo speakers and a main screen with cinematic proportions, it's great for movie sessions. Obviously, a little over 6-inch OLED isn't a giant, but you can also turn that into an advantage – for example, by cuddling up to each other while watching together.
... I saw the light
For me, watching together with this Motka would have been enough, because at first I really fell in love with it, but later several factors made the initial infatuation disappear. The Razr doesn't last too long on a single charge, nor does it replenish its energy particularly quickly – the competing OPPO N2 Flip, which I wrote about a few months ago, achieves much better results in this area. The cameras also don't stand up to comparison, not even with the OPPO, or even with the almost year-old Samsung Z Flip 4.
What decision to make in this situation? Well, it reminds me a bit of stereotypical scenes in romantic comedies, where a few guys first fight over a woman and then tell her to decide which one to choose. The answer is always: *"none"*. Motorola is beautiful and tempting, but I think the upcoming Samsung and OPPO models offer similar styling, and they were already leading in two key aspects. So it's worth waiting a few months. Or at least waiting for promotions 🙂 Currently, Motorola costs 5499 Polish zlotys.
