Objectively, the Motorola Edge 30 Fusion isn't the best choice in its class, but it has "that something"! It charms with its design and effortless usability 🧙♂️.
Motorola – what can we expect from this brand
For several years, Motorola has faced a major dilemma: "is it better to be the best of the mid-rangers, or mediocre among the flagships?". I don't know about you, but I can relate – I've struggled with similar quandaries. However, that's where the analogies end, because I've never produced amazing budget smartphones, let alone average expensive ones.
Unlike Moto. It has long been known for solid models around 1000 Polish zlotys, which last for a few years and are considered quite reliable, but at the same time, you can see its ambition to break into the flagship market 💪. Unfortunately, its more expensive creations haven't held up against the competition recently – they weren't impressive in terms of features, they didn't look quite right, and the photos they took were nothing special. Until now!
How much does the Edge 30 Fusion cost and is it worth the price?
The Edge 30 Fusion costs 2999 Polish zlotys. That's a lot, but still quite reasonable – to afford one, you only need to "rob" half a village, not three. For this price, you get a very good phone, and most importantly: exceptionally beautiful. Because, you know, if Vikings didn't care about style, they wouldn't have such perfectly trimmed beards, and they wouldn't skimp on barbers in upscale areas 🧔.
The matte, slightly rough-to-the-touch back is both practical and charming, and the entire construction feels delicate 🦋, yet solid. Plus, the phone is light and sits perfectly in your hand, despite its fairly large battery. I also really like the slightly curved screen, which, while not serving any specific function, adds elegance to the Fusion.
The biggest advantages of the Motorola Edge 30 Fusion
Indeed, the display and speakers are top-notch. A 6.5-inch OLED, plus stereo sound, would be worthy of even a more expensive device. It's a shame there's no mini-jack, but you can't have everything.
Battery life doesn't disappoint – in 40 minutes, you'll barely have time to braid your beautiful beards, and the Motorola will be fully charged. To drain it, you'll need to use it intensively for about a day. And I guarantee you'll want to!
Since I'm just turning 30, I've recently started to really appreciate dignified synonyms for the word "old". My favorite is probably "experienced", so the Motka's performance is handled by the experienced Snapdragon 888+ processor, which, not ironically, is a huge advantage. It's last year's top-of-the-line chipset – in everyday use, you won't notice any difference in smoothness compared to the newer Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. I'd even say that the 888+ heats up less and is more reliable. And in Viking lingo: the Edge 30 Fusion will execute all your commands in an instant and perform as you should expect from a device at this price.
Interesting options available in the new Motorola
The system is also very nice – it's almost pure Android, but the manufacturer has enriched it with some interesting customization options, a desktop mode that activates when connected to a monitor and is useful for watching movies or photos, and shortcuts to the most important functions. For example, you turn on the flashlight by twice "chopping" the phone vertically. Yes, exactly like with an axe 🪓. And a double tap on the back launches an app of your choice.
Then there's the camera situation 🤳. When it comes to cameras, Motorola has never been a powerhouse, but here it's quite good. While there's no telephoto lens, photos from the main and wide-angle cameras – even taken at night – look really decent. Selfies are good too. And it's nice that a phone for 3K didn't miss out on 8K video recording. That's not common! The only thing that doesn't quite convince me are a few software-specific features – the portrait mode sometimes cuts out subjects from the background as skillfully as a 4-year-old holding scissors for the first time, and on selfies, my face is often smoothed and beautified to an excessive degree. Maybe the phone sees that I don't have a braided beard and is trying to save my appearance somehow? 🤷
If I had to choose a phone for 3000 Polish zlotys… I'd probably go for the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE, which has a water resistance certification and a telephoto lens. However, the Edge 30 Fusion is one of those devices that are just incredibly pleasant to use, and it's easy to overlook its shortcomings. Besides, I've already seen the Fusion on sale for 2400 Polish zlotys, and for that money, I'd buy it without hesitation! We haven't had such a good Motorola in the higher price range for many years.
