You've probably heard that 5G is all about spectacular speed, right? 🏃 5G technology isn't just about speed. Low ping, high network capacity, and connection stability are also noteworthy.

At Mobile Vikings, we use the Play network infrastructure. The 5G available in Play means improved network parameters, but we're still a long way from the advertised speeds. What's holding back the introduction of 5G on frequencies dedicated to this technology? Our infrastructure partner is ready to purchase frequencies in the C-band, but we don't yet know the completion date for these actions. When can we expect 5G coverage throughout Poland?
What speed can a 5G network achieve?
A prepaid phone with 5G access will allow you to get a faster and more stable internet connection. 5G tests in other countries show speeds of up to 20 Gb/s (download) and 10 Gb/s (upload) are possible. However, the speed depends on many factors, such as your distance from the transmitter or your device's specifications. So, it won't be spectacular everywhere. It's quite possible you won't feel the dizzying speed after switching to 5G. And it's no wonder, because this latest technology isn't just about speed.
The following facts are also worth noting:
- 5G networks stand out with much lower latency (so-called ping) compared to older solutions, like LTE internet (4G). Fast response time is particularly important for online gaming.
- Network connection stability even with a large number of users. The load capacity of 5G technology can be up to 1 million devices per square kilometer. This allows you to easily send a video or photo while enjoying yourself at a concert. 🎸
- 5G network reliability when moving at speeds up to 500 km/h. You can use the network even when traveling by high-speed train. 🚄
- You gain access to modern technology, and it will be developed in the coming years. If you don't want to be left behind, opt for an offer with 5G access. 💪
When will 5G coverage be nationwide in Poland?
To achieve the expected 5G speeds, the C-band is crucial. Specifically, we're talking about frequencies in the 3.4-3.8 GHz range. Its purpose is to increase coverage in areas where the signal has been unsatisfactory. Target frequency bands have not yet been made available, which is hindering the full development of the technology in Poland. Operators have repeatedly appealed to the Polish government to hold a C-band auction, which is essential for expanding the 5G network. The purchase of frequencies was supposed to start on April 23, 2020, but the bidding process was blocked due to the pandemic. On December 20, 2022, the process of analyzing auction documentation for the C-band will begin.
How does 5G work in Poland?
Infrastructure operators have taken matters into their own hands and are involved in expanding antennas and performing so-called refarming. UKE (Office of Electronic Communications) has granted permission for antenna modernization. The number of users within 5G coverage is growing month by month. At the end of 2022, Play, Orange, and T-Mobile offer 5G on the 2100 MHz band, and Plus on the 2600 MHz band. These are frequencies that have been used for 4G (LTE) coverage until now.
At Mobile Vikings, we act in the best interest of Vikings. We use the best solution currently available in Poland.
Our infrastructure partner (Play) has rolled up its sleeves and is already expanding and modernizing antennas. Thanks to this, once the C-band is made available, the 5G network's performance will be even more stable and faster. Furthermore, tests of the C-band are being conducted in Poland under the watchful eye of UKE. They indicate full readiness for the implementation of this technology.
How to enable 5G on your phone?
To activate the 5G network at Mobile Vikings, you need a smartphone that supports this technology and an appropriate tariff with 5G. You should be aware that not all smartphones support the modern 5G network.
To enable 5G on an Android phone:
- Go to Settings
- Then select Mobile networks
- Go to Network mode and choose 5G/LTE/3G/2G
- That's all! 🥳
To enable 5G on an iOS phone:
- Go to Settings
- Then go to the Cellular section
- Select Cellular Data Options
- Go to the Voice & Data panel and change the preferred network type to 5G/LTE/3G/2G
- Done! 🥳
Like other operators, Play is waiting for the government to make the C-band available, which will mean even faster and more stable internet performance. In the post "What is 5G and what is it all about," you will find more information about this technology.
Update 01/03/2023
On December 20, 2022, the president of UKE initiated consultations for four auctions for frequencies in the 3.6 GHz band. The procedure has been divided into several stages. UKE indicates August 2023 as a realistic timeframe for making 5G bands available for use.
